Canadian Economic History
Curriculum guideline
Lectures and seminars.
- An introduction to the economic history of the Maritimes and the rivalries among colonial powers in the North Atlantic region.
- The early staples: The exploitation of renewable natural resources.
- The changing structure of the Canadian economy: The National Policy.
- Land policy and the development of agriculture.
- Banking and capital markets before and after Confederation.
- Capital formation and the industrialization of Canada.
- Transportation and investment in infrastructure.
- Labour and the role of labour organization in the Canadian economy.
- Foreign investment: Its role and impact on the Canadian economy.
- Regional variations in economic development and growth.
- Recent developments in the economic analysis of Canada’s historical development.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the economic development of Canada both before and after Confederation.
- Analyze how economic forces and policies have shaped the development of Canada both before and after Confederation.
- Identify the contributions, and limitations, of economic analysis to broadening our understanding of the process of Canadian economic development.

THERE WILL BE A MINIMUM OF THREE (3) EVALUATIONS.
Students may conduct research as part of their coursework in this class. Instructors for the course are responsible for ensuring that student research projects comply with College policies on ethical conduct for research involving humans, which can require obtaining Informed Consent from participants and getting the approval of the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøÆØÒ»Çø¶þÇø Research Ethics Board prior to conducting the research.
